HORROR COOLED SEMEN STORY: One of my clients in Alaska called and asked
if I
knew how to avoid further cooled semen disasters. The story goes: A
bitch owner called
and needed cooled semen from the Alaskan based stud on a Saturday. Not
one vet would help
the stud owner. In desparation, the dog owner went to the Emergency
Clinic, where they were
coldly told that their needs did not qualify as an "emergency".
Of
course, the stud owner
was devastated and felt badly for the bitch owner, too. If vets will
not cooperate,
stud owners should be prepared to collect, process, and ship themselves.
Cooled semen processing is not aveterinary procedure, so all owners
considering using cooled semen inremote areas such as Alaska, should be
prepared to properly collect, evaluate, process, and ship the semen. Send
one or two collections yourself
and have the vets do one if you are concerned about paperwork
requirements.
Years ago, we held weekend "hands on seminars" so breeders could
learn
necessary skills to
assure proper cooled semen shipping and breeding.
Maybe we better set up one last great "hands on" breeders frozen,
Cooled, Progesterone, seminar..
HAPPY COOLED SEMEN STORIES FOR BALANCE: Angie and Vic Monteleon and Mary
and Tom Mulligan, DVM
reported 7 cool pups (5F, 2M) born to Doberman bitch Ch. Montwood's
Desire of DelCrest CD ROM.
The first collection was not very good quality because (again) the
Florida vet entrusted to do the cool collection
was out of town, leaving a technician who did not read the instructions
to handle the collection process. However,
the second collection was great and certainly "did the trick"
nonsurgically, of course. Congratulations to all.
SECOND COOLED SEMEN litter story was called in by Chicago area Great
Dane Breeder DEE Gesiorski asking if she
knew if her 15 cooled semen pups were a record litter size. We sent
BILLIONS of great sperm from one of Bev Hauer's studs.
FROZEN SEMEN INTERNATIONAL: Chinese Crested Frozen Semen sent to
Australia by Julie Wells has produced!
Another set of shipping pain erased from memory with the blush of
success.
IF you are a CANINE CRYOBANK CLIENT and have a home page advertising
your dogs, please send the address to us if you want to have reciprocal
links to our new page.
I know this will be especially helpful to the many foreign and domestic
breeders trying to find out if studs have frozen semen stored.
Our new webpage will be up very soon detailing the "how to's"
of frozen,
cooled, fresh semen, progesterone testing,
plasma for neonates, etc. It is becoming much more important to let the
world know of your dogs' availability through frozen and
cooled semen and this interlinking will make it easier to find all the
necessary information in one place.
Thankful that the happy stories outnumber the horror stories this week,
Carol
